Edamame is an inviting and informal eatery on Holywell Street in Oxford's city centre, known for its small, cosy interior with simple decor and pine tables. The atmosphere is often bustling, with queues frequently extending outside, making it an institution for many. This family-run establishment distinguishes itself by serving only authentic Japanese cuisine, standing apart from numerous Asian "fusion" or chain restaurants.
The restaurant specialises in genuine Japanese home cooking and sushi, utilising fresh ingredients delivered daily to ensure quality. It operates with a rotating schedule of three smaller menus: a lunch menu available most days, a dedicated sushi night on Thursday evenings, and a dinner menu for Friday and Saturday early evenings. Beyond the signature edamame beans, notable dishes include breaded chicken katsu, miso ramen, stir-fried pork loin (shogayaki), and fresh salmon options, all offered at modest prices.
Edamame best suits those seeking a casual, unpretentious, and authentic Japanese dining experience rather than a formal meal. It is a perfect spot for a quick and satisfying dinner with friends, particularly for patrons who appreciate good value and are comfortable with the lively environment and the possibility of sharing a communal table. To enjoy this popular spot, arriving early is advisable due to its no-reservations policy and consistent demand.

We particularly enjoyed the variety of hand rolls and nigiri. The eel nigiri topped with sesame seeds was a highlight of our dinner. It is a wonderful spot for anyone who loves fresh sushi and a relaxed atmosphere. We will definitely be back.
The home-style Japanese cooking was delicious, and the cosy atmosphere reminded us of a traditional Japanese set-meal restaurant back home. It instantly made us feel at ease.
It was also lovely to be welcomed by Japanese staff, which made my mum feel especially comfortable and at home.
Thank you for such a wonderful meal and your warm hospitality. We’d love to come back the next time we’re in Oxford.
