Details

Mr Wang Hot Pot Oxford offers a truly distinctive and interactive dining experience right in the vibrant Gloucester Green area. Stepping inside its bright, yellow-accented premises, guests are greeted by a clean, minimalist space, with tables thoughtfully prepared with soup ladles and chopsticks, setting the stage for a unique culinary adventure. The venue truly stands out by empowering diners to craft their own meal, selecting from an extensive "wall of flavours" featuring a wide array of fresh ingredients. This engaging, almost theatrical, approach ensures a buzzing and convivial atmosphere, where each person enjoys their own individual hot pot, making it a memorable outing.

The restaurant specialises in Malatang, a Chinese street food concept best described as "hot and spicy in a bowl," where customisation is key. Diners fill a basket with their chosen meats, seafood, vegetables, herbs, dumplings, and noodles, which are then weighed and priced. A variety of rich soup bases are available, including their signature bone broth, a sour and spicy golden soup, and a rich tomato soup, alongside a Sichuan-style spicy and numbing option, all with adjustable spice levels. To complete the meal, an unlimited DIY dipping sauce bar allows for personalised flavour combinations using ingredients like sesame paste, garlic, soy sauce, and chilli oils.

This flexible dining style makes Mr Wang Hot Pot Oxford an excellent choice for a wide range of visitors and occasions. Whether seeking a swift and flavourful lunch on one's own, a lively group meal catering to varied spice preferences, or a leisurely evening creating bespoke dishes, it accommodates all. Its interactive nature and extensive vegetarian options, including a dedicated vegan broth, mean it suits food enthusiasts, students, and those looking for a healthy and engaging meal in Oxford.

Summarize your experience in one word. Me? Wow. The concept of collecting food was fun and enjoyable especially if you have kids. The staff are kind and helpful. Shoutout to one who explained in detail to me what to do. I question the hygiene of putting meat and food in your green basket but otherwise this was the best meal I’ve had in months. Totally recommend. Also, wait 5-15 minutes for your broth to cool, you don’t want to burn yourself!!!🤣

Nice place I came across during a day trip to Oxford. I went there for lunch and found the concept really original, as you can create your own hot pot and even make your own sauce (they also provide recommendations, which is nice). Overall, the experience was great. However, I didn’t find the ingredients to be the best in terms of quality - I was expecting slightly fresher products. That said, it was still tasty, so I would recommend it.

3rd time trying Mr Wang’s, lovely as always! Split a seafood hotpot and ate until I cried, affordable for what you get as well as a great selection of ingredients.

Brilliant service too!
