The Four Candles is a welcoming and lively Wetherspoons pub situated on George Street in the heart of Oxford, occupying a modern, converted townhouse across two floors. Renowned for its friendly, laid-back atmosphere, the venue celebrates the city's rich past with a wealth of photographs and memorabilia adorning its walls. It draws its unique name from the celebrated Two Ronnies comedy sketch, a fitting tribute given comedian Ronnie Barker's local schooling and early stage performances nearby.
Diners can expect a familiar British menu, featuring pub classics such as good hamburgers, fish and chips, and cod, alongside tempting desserts like ice cream and apple crumble. The pub is particularly noted for its wide selection of affordable drinks, including various lagers, cask ales, and a range of craft beers, as well as Lavazza coffee. Vegetarian and vegan options are also readily available, with a dedicated menu offering choices like bean chilli and sweet potato curry.
This popular establishment is ideally suited for a diverse range of visitors, from students seeking a relaxed yet social evening to families benefiting from its child-friendly amenities and kids' menu. It serves as an excellent spot for casual meetups, quick meals, and pre-theatre dining, offering good value and fast service, especially when ordering via their app.

We ordered a Large Breakfast, but it arrived without both the bacon and mushrooms. Staff told us they were unavailable because of a fridge problem and that a notice had been put on the pub door. However, there was no warning on the menu or when we actually ordered, so we paid the full price without being told that two items were missing.
We politely asked if they could substitute an extra sausage or egg for the missing items, which seemed perfectly reasonable, but they refused.
What made the experience worse was the attitude of the female member of staff at the counter, who was particularly unfriendly and dismissive when we tried to explain the problem. We also tried to raise the issue with the manager, but no reasonable solution was offered.
I completely understand that equipment can break and ingredients can run out, but customers should be told clearly before ordering. If two items from a breakfast are unavailable, offering a simple substitute shouldn’t be difficult. Very poor handling of what should have been an easy problem to resolve.
