Shoryu Ramen Oxford offers an award-winning interior, seamlessly blending traditional Japanese Hakata building techniques with Oxford's architectural heritage. This striking design creates a sophisticated dining space within the Westgate Shopping Centre, utilising locally sourced stone, bronze, and oak alongside Japanese elements like illuminated rice lanterns and a bespoke Hakata wall crafted from roof tiles. Upon arrival, guests are often greeted with an energetic "Irasshaimase" and rhythmic drumbeats, before settling into a calm, unhurried atmosphere enhanced by an engaging open kitchen.
The restaurant specialises in authentic Hakata tonkotsu ramen, featuring a rich, creamy pork broth simmered for over twelve hours, generously topped with char siu pork belly, nitamago egg, and kikurage mushrooms. Beyond their signature Shoryu Ganso Tonkotsu, a range of ramen variations is available, including a popular White Natural ramen with a soy milk, miso, and mushroom broth for vegetarians, alongside delicious Shoryu buns with fillings such as char siu pork belly or pumpkin croquette. Guests can also explore an extensive drinks menu, notably boasting one of the UK's largest selections of sake, alongside Japanese-inspired cocktails.

Be aware before you dine here. We were charged £5.50 for an edamame we never ordered.
At the start of the meal, the staff brought us a bowl of edamame without asking if we wanted it. Since complimentary appetizers are common in the U.S., I assumed it was free. When the bill arrived, I noticed it had been added, along with a 10.25% service charge and expensive bottled water. In the UK, tipping isn’t generally expected, so the extra charge made it even more disappointing.
When I asked what the charge was for, they asked if I wanted it removed from the bill. Of course I said yes, but customers shouldn’t have to ask to remove something they never ordered.
The food itself was good, and the staff were friendly. My issue is that we were never asked whether we wanted the edamame. I also noticed the British couple sitting next to us wasn’t served one, which made me wonder if this is something that’s only done to customers who appear to be tourists.
The ramen was fantastic and had such a rich, deep broth. I was particularly impressed by the soft-boiled egg, which was cooked to perfection. I also tried the green matcha cake for dessert, and the layers were incredibly thin and delicate. It was the perfect way to finish a great lunch.
Great service, allowing us to sit and wait for a table we desired more. Quite busy, but not too long waiting times, although reservation is recommended.
What really stood out, though, was the excellent service. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even more enjoyable.
Definitely a place I’d recommend and happily return to!
