Details

Aston's Eyot is a distinctive 32-acre island nature reserve situated in East Oxford, uniquely formed by the convergence of the River Thames, River Cherwell, and Shire Lake Ditch. Having transformed from its former life as a city rubbish tip into a thriving wildlife haven, it offers a refreshing semi-wild green space, providing a tranquil escape from the bustling city. The character of the Eyot is one of natural serenity, maintained by volunteers, presenting a peaceful atmosphere that stands out for those seeking a less manicured outdoor experience.

Visitors can explore the Eyot's varied habitats, which include a mix of woodland, open areas, and scrub, all interconnected by accessible paths. It serves as an excellent location for quiet strolls, running, and dog walking, as well as a prime spot for wildlife observation. The area is home to numerous breeding birds like sparrowhawks and green woodpeckers, with regular sightings of kites and kingfishers. Lucky visitors might also spot roe deer, muntjac, or foxes, and the reserve is known for its butterflies, including the rare brown hairstreak.

This nature reserve is particularly well-suited for individuals and families who appreciate connecting with nature, enjoying gentle walks, or engaging in bird-watching and wildlife spotting. Its overall appeal lies in its rustic charm and the opportunity it provides for a restorative break from urban life, making it perfect for those seeking an authentic natural environment close to Oxford. The commitment of local volunteers to maintaining its wild character further enhances its allure as a community-supported natural retreat.

Just discovered this oasis with my dog and we had a fantastic time. The land is well managed feel safe for my dog to explore around and foot paths are easy to follow and nice to walk on.

Everyone I met were with their dog, and all very well behaved. I think it is 100% on the owners to make sure their dog behaves off the lead.

There is no facilities on the island, some sitting area and water side area be very nice.

The group of volunteers are doing a great job to keep the place for everyone to use. Please join or help if you can

Beautiful area and a great place for wildlife to thrive. Unfortunately while I was walking there a few years ago, I was attacked by a dog. Due to too many people walking their dogs off lead and the rising number of dog attacks, I will definitely not be returning there.
