Details

Exeter College Sports Ground provides a significant green expanse dedicated to sport and recreation in Oxford, situated between University Parks and Marston. This facility, part of the historic Exeter College, benefits from its setting along the flood plain of the River Cherwell, which lends an open and verdant character to the area. While traditionally serving the college's students, there are plans underway to modernise and open the grounds to a wider community, aiming to transform it into a year-round destination for sport and leisure. Its location close to an Oxford City Wildlife Site and New Marston Meadows SSSI further enhances its natural atmosphere.

The grounds currently feature pitches for cricket and football, alongside flat grass areas for general recreational use. Existing squash courts are also available. Future proposals for this site include enhanced football and rugby pitches, new cricket nets, hardcourts suitable for basketball and netball, and both covered and outdoor padel courts, promising a comprehensive range of sporting activities. Visitors will also find plans for improved footpaths and designated running or walking routes, designed to make this valued green space more accessible and safer for all. Efforts are being made to enhance its natural beauty with wild grasses meadows and wildflower plantings.

This sporting destination primarily suits Exeter College students, fostering a strong athletic spirit within the institution. However, with the planned redevelopment and opening of new facilities, it will increasingly cater to local residents, schools, and various clubs, offering a vibrant hub for active pursuits and community engagement. While public access presently requires permission, the vision is to create a welcoming environment for those seeking both organised sport and informal recreation, making it an appealing spot for families, fitness enthusiasts, and nature lovers alike.

Well I don't really think this is a public space but you do see "locals" playing football there from time to time. If Exeter College really doesn't mind this then I would give the place 5 stars but i assume they would and if it ever became popular for people to use it then i'm sure they would put a stop to it
