Broad Walk is a distinguished wide walkway traversing east-west, situated gracefully on the northern edge of Christ Church Meadow and south of Merton Field in central Oxford. This inviting promenade, historically a fashionable route in the 19th century and once described as a "cathedral-like space," features a broad gravel path. It connects St Aldate's at its western end, passing through the Christ Church War Memorial Garden, all the way to the River Cherwell and the southern end of the University of Oxford Botanic Garden in the east. Its serene atmosphere, coupled with its central location, makes it a prominent and celebrated feature of Oxford's landscape, standing out for its enduring charm.
Along this pathway, visitors can enjoy wonderful views across the expansive Christ Church Meadow. To the north, the impressive Meadow Building of Christ Church, built in an imposing Venetian Gothic style, is immediately visible. Overhead, views of some of Oxford's iconic spires and towers present themselves, including Tom Tower, the spire of Christ Church Cathedral, Merton College Chapel Tower, and Magdalen Tower. While historically lined with grand elm trees, these were sadly lost to Dutch elm disease in the 1970s and have since been replaced with a mix of oriental and hybrid plane trees. The adjoining Christ Church Meadow offers opportunities for tranquil river walks and picnics, often grazed by a herd of Longhorn cattle.
This tranquil thoroughfare is perfectly suited for those seeking leisurely strolls and moments of peaceful contemplation amidst Oxford's historic academic setting. It appeals greatly to walkers and families wishing to explore the city's picturesque landscapes and architectural grandeur without the hustle and bustle of the immediate city centre. The overall appeal lies in its blend of natural beauty, rich history, and the opportunity to appreciate stunning views of university colleges, making it an ideal choice for visitors who wish to immerse themselves in the authentic charm of Oxford.
