Details

Shotover Country Park offers a cherished expanse of beauty and history right on the eastern edge of Oxford. This substantial country park, spanning 117 hectares on the southern slopes of Shotover Hill, presents an intimate mosaic of varied landscapes, encompassing hidden valleys, ancient woodlands, heath, grasslands, and marsh habitats. Spectacular views unfold across south Oxfordshire from its higher elevations, creating a serene atmosphere and establishing it as a significant haven for diverse wildlife and peaceful rural enjoyment. A large portion of the park is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, underscoring its national importance for both its varied ecosystems and its resident flora and fauna.

Visitors can explore an extensive network of paths, including three distinct way-marked trails, all conveniently starting from Mary Sadler's Field near the main car park. These trails cater to various preferences, from leisurely strolls and invigorating jogs to dedicated dog walks, with routes ranging from thirty minutes to two hours in duration. For those on horseback or bicycle, five kilometres of bridleways are available. Children particularly enjoy the natural sandpit with its small, gentle stream, while the park's woodlands are carpeted with wildflowers like bluebells and celandines in spring and summer, accompanied by a rich chorus of birdsong.

Open to the public throughout the year and entirely free of charge, Shotover Country Park welcomes everyone seeking an escape into nature. It provides an ideal setting for a summer picnic, quiet contemplation, or active pursuits like orienteering, with a dedicated 30-station course. The park regularly hosts community events, including guided walks and cross-country races, making it a versatile destination for families, nature enthusiasts, and those simply wishing to enjoy the Oxfordshire countryside.

A beautiful forest with little groves and glades scattered about; quiet and rustic, with a wonderfully juxtaposed view of the city from the park. It being up on a hill makes for a good workout if you're going on foot, and you'll get to see some adorable grey bunnies as there's almost always a few of them hopping around. Overall wonderful place if you're seeking a quiet escape from the busy city.

Real muddy day slipping and sliding all over the place. Then I happened upon a fallen tree or half a tree. The grins and knots reminded me of how a river flows with eddys and swirls absolutely beautiful
