Details

Oxford Castle Prison is a historic landmark situated in the heart of Oxford city centre, dating back to the 11th century when it was built by William the Conqueror as a royal fortress. Over the centuries, this formidable site transformed from a powerful stronghold into Oxfordshire County Gaol, eventually closing as a prison in 1996. Today, it stands as a captivating heritage destination, offering a unique journey through a thousand years of Oxford's dramatic history, encompassing tales of Norman conquest, medieval turmoil, and Victorian justice. Its ancient walls and immersive atmosphere provide a distinctive character that truly brings the city's past to life for all who visit.

A memorable highlight involves ascending St George's Tower, one of Oxford's oldest buildings, to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the city's renowned "dreaming spires". Descending into the atmospheric 900-year-old crypt, the sole surviving remains of St. George's Chapel, offers an eerie insight into its deep history. Moreover, exploring the austere confines of the 18th-century Debtors' Tower and the Victorian prison D-Wing allows guests to uncover the grim realities of prison life and the stories of its former inmates.

This place offers a look into the history of the prison and beyond. You need to be booked on to a tour group but this is a good thing as it is included in the price and you get a lot of inside information from the tour guides. You get to see quite a bit over the hour plus tour. Was not to expensive and a good way to kill 90 mins.

We visited the Castle and prison, the mound was shut due to weather. Our tour guide Willow was good and the tour interesting. Not cheap but nothing is these days, interesting history and good to learn, not so much a children's tour though. Thought it may have been bigger for the price.

After visiting the Castle & prison a few weeks ago I booked to go on the ambient Spectre ghost walk around Oxford starting at the castle.
Such a fun evening, our host was fantastic and knew his ghostly history. This ghost walk is suitable for younger children I would say. 10/10.
